A power point presentation with photos of India and some some stories about what I saw there when my husband Rick and I toured for a month. I wish that I could add the heat, the sounds, the smells, the sense of resourcefulness. The students used the stamps that I brought home from India and followed directions to make a cylinder stamped with images of India. These photos are of their work.

Stamping India into Clay at Box of Books Library, Alfred

The Allegany Arts Association continued work with children through the annual Summer Arts Festival. These clay cylinders were made at the Alfred Box of Books Library on July 6. Students stamped impressions in clay with hand carved wooden stamps from India. They also viewed photo taken during that trip to India and tried to get some small understanding of a tiny part of India. The class was presented by Elaine Hardman, StoneFlowerPottery.com in Wellsville. Hardman toured India in 2007.

Invitational Exhibit at Cohen Center

ALFRED: To usher in its 4^th year on Main Street , The Cohen Center Gallery opened to the community with a show curated by Sandy Greiff and sponsored by the Allegany Arts Association.

The Cohen Center, a gift of Michele and Martin Cohen, serves Alfred University in many ways. Freshman Foundations classes are taught in the barn at the rear of the complex while the house holds 2 apartments for visiting artists on the second floor and a gallery ready to accommodate a visual or performance exhibition on the first floor.

Kevin Jacobs, director of the Cohen Center, said that an important mission of the space is to give undergraduates real world experience in the commerce of art. Sharon McConnell, Director of the Fosdick Nelson Gallery, teaches an Exhibition Design Class in which students conceive, install and de-install shows in the gallery.

Generally these shows have involved members of Alfred University but Leslie Bellavance, Dean of the School of Art and Design, heartily supports community based art programs and so approved the use of the Cohen Center by the Allegany Arts Association for this invitational show featuring local work.

Jacobs said, “As the director of the Cohen Center, I felt no hesitation in trusting Sandy Greiff’s judgment and know that this show will be an elegant success.”

Greiff enlisted two other members of the board of directors of the Allegany Arts Association to help her with the show.

Joanne Allen stopped moving work to speak for a moment about Joe Tecza’s photograph of an aging home entitled Sentinel.

“The piece is about our rural location. When I first came to Allegany Country there was a house just like that on Elm Valley Road. Every time I passed it I thought of the pioneers who made a living here in the not-so-distant past. “

“This photo captures what I felt every time I saw that house. The angle of the photo intrigues me and holds my eye and my mind. It’s a wonderful photograph.”

Also on hand was Patty Sherman of Wellsville. Patty spoke about two watercolors. “I really like Karen Dickerson’s piece, Dature-Trumpet Vine, maybe because I’m a nature lover and a gardener. I think that the painting catches that one moment when the light is on the blossoms in a way that makes them live.”

“I also like Karen Lang’s piece, Dream in Lilac. It’s the colors. They are subtle and relaxing. She often focuses on the subtleties in nature and I find her pieces calming and enjoyable. Her work gives me a feeling that I need in my life just now.”

When all the work was hung and the gallery quieted, Greiff sat to look at Hope Zaccagni’s painting, Salt Mine with Yellow Train Car.

“I do like this very much,” said Greiff. “The colors are muted but the sky is vibrant to draw one’s attention. I like the architectural lines and shapes, the geometric sense of the composition. The piece is Hopperesque to me with a feeling of solitude or isolation.”

“The triangles, edges and rigid shapes are fascinating to me. I have driven past this scene many times but I never saw it as art. Hope’s work is like that. She sees what others do not see.”

Also presenting work in the show are Thor Bueno, Val Cushing, Wanda Dean, Alice Deres, Barbara Elsenheimer, Elaine Hardman, Wayne Higby, Bea Jevremovic, Caroline Littell, Stephen Myers, Amanda Parry Oglesbee, Tom O’Grady and Mario Prisco.

The Allegany Arts Association thanks Barbara Greil for assistance in hanging the show and invites the public to this free exhibition. Hours are in July from 11:30 to 4:30 on Thursday and Friday and 5-7:30 on Tuesday and Wednesday with an artist Reception July 19 from 5-7:30.

Simple Gifts Performs

Partnerships are roots that nourish a flowering society. Alone we can do but in a partnership we do double, triple or more.

Simple Gifts is a partnership of 2 women, a dozen stringed instruments made to pluck, strum, hammer or bow, a bellows and some recorders that take a simple breath and pull it into a vibrant rainbow of sound. Simple Gifts, Karen Hirshon and Linda Littleton, gave their music to enthusiastic reception at the David A. Howe Library with funding from one of its partners, the Allegany Arts Association.

One element of the concert was the open sharing of information about the instruments and the music which included tunes from Irish, American, Klezmer, Gypsy, Balkan and Indian roots. There was even a lesson in how to play the smallest and most easily acquired instrument – the soup spoons.

Hirshon and Littleton have been partners in music for 13 years. They said that when people get along and make good music, it’s hard to quit. They form an “alternate universe” and it feels, and sounds, like home.

After the program, Aydrianna Weimer said, “The concert was great. I especially liked that they knew different tunes and styles and they smiled a lot.”

Aydrianna, a 4^th grader in Wellsville who plays recorder and intends to play flute soon, claimed the Shruti box as her favorite instrument. The Shruti is an Indian instrument that consists of reeds powered by a foot operated bellows. Hirshon said that the instrument is designed to be used during meditation but that it sounds great when it accompanies a flute and that’s how she first heard it.

Simple Gifts was the first program in Appalachia Rediscovered – a 2 month project funded in part by another Library partner, the Allegany County Area Foundation. Programs include academic lectures, concerts, films, classes, art exhibits and other events to address social, political, economical, environmental and cultural issues that have formed and continue to transform this thirteen-state region.

Karen Lang Show at Howe Public Library

You just can't see the color in these photos. There isn't enough light in the room for my little camera to make that happen but Karen Lang sees color in the world and she brought her paintings from Berlin to Wellsville so that you can see them too. The Arts Association sponsored her show. Open when the Library is open. Stop by and be amazed.

Allison Midgley adds her touch to the Albright Knox

Early in my life there was an incident with a bobby pin as a scribble-device. Looking back through 55 years of cobwebbed time, I faintly see varnish dust fly from the broken tip of a black bobby pin. The scribble grew, intertwined and danced with movement and intricacy.

Unfortunately my creativity involved a treasured parlor end table. I remember my mother’s crestfallen face as she rubbed the table top in disbelief and despair.

Many of us likely have early life scribble experiences ranging from achievement to disaster. At the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo scribble lives as noun, verb and art as a team of artists, printmakers and architects scribble over walls bridging the 1905 gallery with the 1962 wing with the installation of the last, the largest and possibly the most intricate of the world’s Sol LeWitt drawings.

Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) created structures, drew, made prints and painted, showing his work at hundreds of solo exhibitions around the world from 1965 onward. He was interested in music, mathematics, architecture, line, process, communication and ideas. Over 1200 of his works were huge, architectural drawings executed by crews as is this Scribble Drawing at the Albright-Knox.

The team working now in Buffalo includes head draftsman Takeshi Arita and 4 assistants from the Sol LeWitt Studio in New York, 2 Albright-Knox Art Handlers and 9 apprentices including librarian/printmaker/mixed media artist Allison Midgley of Wellsville. For 8 weeks the crew will draw millions of layered, chaotic scribbles that will, over time and from a distance, become an ordered, precise drawing covering 2200 square feet.

Now, in week three, the artists enter a scaffold area covered in taped plastic sheets housing ladders. The air, filled with graphite motes – escapees from the process - is forced through a filtration system that drones during work periods. Zippers in the plastic allow entry and exit. Disposable booties over shoes trap some dirt and on either side of entry points sticky floor mats are tattooed with graphite footprints.

The plastic walls defining the work area were constructed weeks ago and the scaffolding held painters who covered the walls with 2 coats of oil based paint and then 5 more of latex – sanding between coats - giving the walls the look and feel of paper.

On the uniform surface, the artists measured out the drawing, masking areas with craft paper and labeling it in white chalk numbers with each number indicating a level of density of line. They had a short lesson in basic scribble technique and started turning graphite into the first of millions of lines. They created flowing curves, sharpening the lead by pulling it against the surface of the wall, bending and turning their hands over the lines, becoming ever more graceful as they worked and received individual coaching.

Like many huge undertakings this is not work for the faint of heart - or arm. They work 6 days a week/ 7 hours a day with lunch and an afternoon break. While at the wall, they are asked to be in the moment with intense concentration. “Be present,” Arita tells them. “Don’t be automatic. Each person is an artist. What you do makes the whole thing work.”

Could they cut the number of drawing hours from the estimated 5,000 if they used brushes? Sprayers? Chalk? Not if they want to accomplish the goal. To give the effect required, the drawing must be of many lines, layered and focused.

The apprentices and draftsmen draw crisp, even, whispers of graphite that build on each other to create the visual roar of millions of butterfly wings. The many lines give the drawing depth so that now, 3 weeks into the project, the densely filled areas look luminous. From one side, they are rich velvet and from another point of view they become huge pipes of burnished steel. The surfaces reflect light as if mirrors. All from a simple pencil.

Sol LeWitt began his drawing career in the 60s with pencil on walls – radical for the time and, according to Ilana Chlebowski, Curatorial Assistant at the Alright-Kinox, still radical.

LeWitt explored paints and colors, shapes and shadows, lines and angles over the decades. To give an idea of his stature, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (with Williams College Museum of Art) opened an exhibition of LeWitt’s work that will be on view for 25 years and offers 105 drawings covering nearly an acre of wall space.

Pieces for that exhibit were among the last works LeWitt created before his death in 2007. They were created with the materials he used in 1960 and returned to – the pencil on a wall. Now, this crew of artists is bringing his last huge graphite, wall project to the world.

Allison Midgley saw the notice of Scribble Wall Line Drawing while surfing the internet. She mulled it over reading through the criteria and applied for the position after learning that she could take a leave of absence from her job at the David A. Howe Library. She put forth her art with her willingness to commit to the 8 week task and after time was thrilled to be accepted.

Wanted: interesting kids ages 5 to 15. Must like to make things & be full of ideas. Sign up to make bracelets, create paintings, master calligraphy, build a book from scratch, needle your way through a bunch of fabric or turn broken sticks into snazzy dolls at our free workshops.

All we ask is that you use your hands, use your mind, use your imagination and make something you’ll be proud of this summer. Here's the deal - the friendly people and businesses of Allegany County are sponsoring a bunch of free art classes for kids through the ongoing program of the Allegany Arts Association.

People came up with this idea in the 1980s and every year the Allegany Arts Association has tried to get the word out about classes. Willie Allen was the executive director of the AAA for years and years and she managed to organize the classes and spread the word. Dear Willie is gone but a group of her friends worked up this new schedule for 2010. We just need the kids.
Here are our free classes. Yes, free. You need to register and then find your own transportation. Attend with a friend and share the driving.

Claudia Gildner, member of Wellsville Art Association, no class size limit, Register for Watercolor only or Pastels only or both.
Sally Danheim - will teach one class meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays all July. She will work with a small group of 5 and 6 year olds to teach drawing and painting with watercolors.
Linda Monsell - will teach her class in 2 different locations. One is at the Trinity Lutheran Daycare but any child may attend that class even if not enrolled in daycare.
Bonnie Leigh offers Making a book - starting with paper and ending with a page turner.
Elaine Hardman will talk about news vs. opinion and try to help students find and write stories to submit to the editor of the Alfred Sun. It will be very helpful for students to have digital camera to capture the news but the plan is to work in pairs so one camera per pair is enough. Nothing fancy please.
Karen Dickerson finds designs in rocks and rocks in designs. She just rocks. Bring a rock or two and she will have the paint. Again, 2 locations to help ease driving for parents.
Lillian Thiel Milliman will put elegance into your alphabet with Calligraphy in Fillmore.
Betsy Orlando is an internationally recognized art doll artist and a great teacher. Join her in Belmont.
Carol Riggs is an artist with a pastry dough.
Kristen Vossler Wigent will help students make bracelets with wood, bone, feathers and stone - natural materials.
Joan Sinclair knows all about decorating fabric with a needle, thread, beads and imagination.
Meredith Chilson is part of Green Circle Grove where she is a sewing marvel.
Linda Staiger is conducting vocal groups at Alfred State College after retiring from teaching music at Alfred Almond. She will work with children and parents to compose and record musical numbers with common household objects. She just has to work out where and when it can fit into the schedule of the building she hopes to use in Almond.

She has known grief and joy, pain and healing, anger and acceptance, guilt and forgiveness.

She is daughter, sister, wife, mother,
Mother-in-law, friend, neighbor, parishioner,
Niece, aunt, great aunt, cousin,
Cat owner, home owner, volunteer, homemaker, writer.

Although she grew up listening to Elvis, Duane Eddy, Ricky Nelson and Roy Orbison,
It wasn’t until the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that she revealed she’s still a rock fan.
Listening now to the local oldies station,
She cries when she hears Elvis sing: “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”

Free Summer Art Classes for children in Allegany County

The Allegany Arts Association will sponsor a number of workshops in Libraries throughout Allegany County in July and August 2010. All classes are free and open to students in Allegany County. Alfred University Herrick Library
1. Elaine Hardman will teach ALFRED’S JUNIOR REPORTS: finding and telling the news in conjunction with The Alfred Sun. Register for July or August or both. Monday July 12 and Thursday July 15 from 1 to 3 pm. Also on Monday August 16 and Thursday August 19 from 1 to 3 pm. For 8 students ages 9-12.

Following the lead of Linn Phelan from the early 1980s, we are organizing a program of free summer art classes for children throughout Allegany County. Details will fill in during April. Here is our skeleton plan.

Whitwood and Friends in free Concert, October 15

What’s the perfect start for this year’s Ridgewalk weekend? Connect with the hills of Allegany County through the songs and melodies of Rick Whitwood’s music. His home-written, hand-crafted songs stand up to anyone’s melodies from “Living the Hard Way” to “Old Man Jones.” Whitwood ‘s songs knit Wellsville’s stories to all small towns and wrap his lyrics around people like grandma’s quilt on a cool evening.

Now Whitwood spends his days on Main Street at the Music Alley where people can pick up a T-Shirt, harmonica, guitar or any number of things related to making or loving music. Interesting people stop in at the Music Alley, drawn by the creativity of Rick or George Cretekos, to find a practice pad, take lessons or arrange gigs. Whitwood’s store has the personality of his clientele and while in it he told me about his music.

As a teen, Whitwood was the little kid in the neighborhood and family. Older cousins belonged to bands and after Rick watched them practice he was hooked. He started earning cash so he could get a $70 electric guitar at Rice’s Music Store on Main Street. The cash came in three ways: sweeping up at Whitwood Motors; helping with deliveries at Mallory TVs; and (“the most lucrative”) playing poker with friends from school.

Whitwood got the guitar and then went on to save for an amp while he worked out how to play. He had some lessons and picked up pointers from the older kids at school. Eventually he was playing guitar in a rock band, Jack Frost, with some other 10th to 12th graders and, get this, sometimes people actually paid them to play.

The other guys in Jack Frost moved out of the area and on to other things while Whitwood developed a bifurcated musical career. Since 1988, he’s played cover songs with Zoar when gigs call for dancin’ music but he’s continued to write his own. When he can play his original music for listening groups, then he plays as Rick Whitwood and Friends.

He wrote his first song at about age 15 but it wasn’t anything he kept. Most of his first songs were written about being in a band or playing music. As a teen he wrote “Living the Hard Way,” a song he considers to be one of his best. It’s about growing up in a rural area and learning from family and from life.

“Living the Hard Way” is one of the songs you’ll hear on Thursday, October 15 at 7 p.m. at the Nancy A Howe Auditorium at the Library when the Allegany Arts Association recognizes local talent and sponsors Rick Whitwood and Friends. The Arts Association’s mission is to encourage all manner of the arts as well as public access to art so they are offering this concert, free, to the community. Whitwood said that the show will be for all ages and hopes that folks will bring their kids.

Performing as his friends will be George Cretekos and Roger Carlin. George was a percussionist in high school but let his music slide while pursuing his career but in about 2004 he and Whitwood got together. Cretekos was interested in doing occasional gigs but not as a member of a cover band. He was also interested in recording music and had all the equipment needed to do that. And (maybe this should have been first) Cretekos thinks that Whitwood’s lyrics deserve a wide audience.

Whitwood’s CD, Desperate Hours, was recorded in the Cretekos home on Riverside Drive in Wellsville. Since that time both the Cretekos family and the recording equipment moved. Now there’s a recording studio in the basement of the Music Alley. Cretekos plays, and sometimes sings a bit, in live performances and they are working on a second CD – one that will have the song performed on the Library lawn this summer – Brown Bottle Flu.

Roger Carlin, bassist, was a member of Zoar with Whitwood for years but now he only performs occasionally. Carlin and Cretekos will help Rick Whitwood create a show with the ease that comes from singing thousands of songs in live shows. Make a note to be at the Library Auditorium on Thursday, October 15 at 7 pm.

Music in Alfred in July

The Alfred Village Band has played marches and more in Alfred, NY on Wednesdays in July for nearly 60 years but this year they are giving Sousa and friends a year off. Mike Shoales, director of the band, generally hosts rehearsals in Andover School’s band room but this year the room is being stretched into the larger size he has needed for years. The renovations in Andover brought the band to the decision to put the music folders in storage and be tacit for the summer.

Linda Staiger, band member and MC, couldn’t bear having music free Wednesdays so she went into the community and organized a sing along, get lost in the words, toe tappin’ program from Rock to Folk to step back in time.

All concerts sponsored by the Alfred Village Band will be at 7:15 pm. Bring a chair and a friend to join us on the green on Main Street.

July 1 - The Vagabonds are a blues and rock band that has been playing in the Alfred area for the past five years. All graduates of Alfred Almond Central School the group includes Steve Kovalcik, John Diggins, Brian Butts, Pat Gaughan and Avery Maracek.

July 8 - Anton Flint – If you were lucky enough to attend the Allegany Players production of Jesus Christ Super Star you know that Anton is more than worth an evening of your time.

July 15- Rick Whitwood (photo above) - Whitwood is a lyricist deserving of an national and timeless audience. Consistently winning awards with songs arranged in partnership with George Cretekos, Rick and his guitar have voices that will stay in your mind.

July 22 – The Camelot Choraleers, based in Belmont and directed by Greg Shelley, is known for harmonic blends, varied programs and a bit of patriotic flair.

July 29 – Three of the members of The Vagabonds, Pat Gaughan, Avery Maracek and John Diggins, regrouped a few months ago to play jazz standards, fusion, and rock.

In the event of rain the programs will be held in the Union University Church Center.

This summer’s plans are underway. Greg Shelley’s off-off Broadway program will sparkle again in Belmont. Carol Riggs of Cakes and Curios will offer an artistic experience in cookie decorating and candy making in Cuba. Elaine Hardman and Kailee Lamphier plan an opportunity to create miniature clay animals in Wellsville. Meredith Chilson is scheduled to teach Sewing in Belmont while Linda Monsell will offer rock painting in Little Genesee. Kathy Hamilton is ready to help make garden stepping stones in Friendship. To make a stick doll sign up to work with Betsy Orlando in Belmont and explore improvisation in Fillmore with Barbara Sandberg-Morgan. If you have a guitar, experience lessons from Tony Musingo, Choral Music Director in Belmont, or join program coordinator Kristen Vossler-Wigent to make bracelets in Scio.

The Allegany Arts Association is a county-wide organization trying to stretch its arms to the corners of the county. If you’ve an idea for a class or a skill to share, please call Kristen Vossler-Wigent at 585-268-5891. That’s also the number to call if your children want to take any of the classes. Age restrictions may apply.

The AAA classes are short—3 to 6 meetings of an hour or 90 minutes in length. Sometimes there’s a show or recital at the end. Teachers can choose an age range (between 5 and 20), class size, location and date in July or August. Locations should be handicapped accessible.

DONATION TO ALFRED U CHAMBER SINGERS

Senior members of the Alfred University Chamber Singers receive a check prior to their April 18 concert at Alfred. The check represents proceeds from their successful Valentine’s Day Concert with which the Allegany Arts Association helped. The funds will be used for the Chorus’s planned 2010 European Tour.

The Singers, led by Conductor extraordinaire Dr. Luanne Crosby, along with the Alfred University Chorus filled the acoustically perfect space at the 7th Day Baptist Church with glorious vocal music that evening. The audience stood and applauded until a rousing encore was heard. The Chamber Singers plan additional fund-raising events in the coming year. Donations will be gratefully accepted. Checks may be made out to Alfred University, with “Chamber Singers Tour” in the memo line, and sent to Alfred University, Alfred, NY 14802.

GENESEE VALLEY CHORUS
President Sharlet Fuller reports that the Genesee Valley Chorus will present “101 Years of Broadway” featuring songs you’ve heard from shows like “Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” Grease,” “Les Mis.,” “Chicago,” (“this will be a show-stopper”), “The Lion King,” “Momma Mia,” “Ragtime,” and “Jekyll & Hyde.” All are invited to come to Trinity Lutheran Church in Wellsville at 3 p.m. June 6 for dessert and entertainment by the Genesee Valley Chorus featuring great local talent in choral and solo formats.

Eight brave poets read their new poetry at the Allegany Arts Association’s Third Annual Poetry Slam held April 2 at the David A. Howe Library in Wellsville. Two Jamestown Community College students, among those who came to support their teacher, Ms. Engl, read poems too.

Grassroots Peace Work at Home and Abroad

Nadine Hoover will present her work on nonviolence, trauma recovery, and building community through trust at the June 5th “First Fridays” program. Nadine coordinates the Indonesia Initiative of Friends Peace Team bringing training in developmental play and trauma healing into post-war areas of Indonesia for people from all sides of conflict. Her work creates a unified story of experiences. She has coordinated Alternatives to Violence workshops since 1978, served as an international consultant on designing educational systems to effect national economies since 1984 and as a Quaker minister since 1996.
The free program, at The Mustard Seed Inn, begins at 7:30.

The Alfred Community Theatre adult actors will stage “Radio Gals” July 17 & 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Union University Church in Alfred.

Students in grades 7 to 12 will put on “The Phantom Tollbooth” July 24 & 25. Nobody seems to have more fun than Alfred Community Theatre folks, unless it’s the audience.

PHOTOGRAPHER RICHARD BURKE PLANS ONE-MAN SHOWS

Allegany Arts Association Board member, Richard Burke will present a show of his outstanding photographs at the Barnes & Noble Cafe, 614 South Meadow Street, Ithaca, NY from June 1 through 27, 2009. The opening Reception will be held June 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. at
the Café.

Burke’s work will also be on exhibit at the Wellsville Creative Arts Center the month of July, with an Opening Reception July 3 beginning at 6 p.m. The public is invited to both shows and receptions.

Speaking about his work, Richard says his current inspiration is the “peeling paint, shadows, silence and internal landscapes of the former Poorhouse in Angelica.”

He said his “telling of the story I am hearing and seeing creates a ghostly Landscape for memory and imagination”; and we think his photographs will surely capture your imagination too. A prolific artist and constant supporter of the arts, Burke’s genius is in his eye for photographs of the beautiful, the unusual and the unexpected.

In addition to his recent photographs, Burke will show earlier unpublished work from his several-year hiatus in Hawaii. The Cattaraugus County Arts Council featured Richard Burke in its January/February 2009 Newsletter and he was featured artist at a one-man show at The Fountain Arts Center Gallery in Belmont in 2007.

Valentine's Day - Love in Any Language

VALENTINE’S DAY with food, wine and song - will update with menu items as they are finalized

A romantic evening of food, wine and song await you on the perfect day – February 14. Alfred University’s Chamber Singers will put love on stage for you on Valentine’s Day. Listen, eat and drink in tender love songs while supporting some of AU’s finest vocalists.

The Allegany Arts Association is working in tandem with the Alfred University Chamber Singers to present this special evening. It will start at 7 p.m. with a cash bar serving wine, beer and soft drinks on the second floor of Howell Hall. Take your reserved seats at 7:45 and the Chamber Singers will deliver an array of hors d’oeuvres to your table to enjoy as the Chamber Singers croon their way through many languages. Before the finale, there will be sumptuous desserts with tea and coffee.

In addition to singing as a group, Chamber Singers will accept special requests and sing a song just for your special someone. Chamber Singers have quite the sense of humor so there’s no predicting just what will happen. Fluttering eyelashes? A song sung on bended knee? You may see a tie twirled here or a hand kissed there. While love is free, songs require a $5 donation.

The Chamber Singers perform under the direction of Dr. Luanne Crosby and the group is raising funds for a 2010 international concert tour and the fundraising of the Allegany Arts Association leads to free art workshops for children throughout Allegany County. But, the real goal is warm entertainment and fine food in the intimate and romantic Howell Hall on Valentine’s Day.

Seating will be limited to 80 so romantics and music lovers should purchase tickets early ($35/couple, $20 single/ $125 table of 8). For tickets in Wellsville go to Fisher’s Pharmacy or call Joanne Allen (585-593-5705). In Alfred stop by the Gallery or call Sandy Greiff (607-587-8372). (Sandy will have tickets in the Powell Campus Center on Thursdays prior to Bergren Forum presentations - 11:30 till 1 on January 29, Feb 5 and 12.)

ANGELICA PLAYERS WARM UP FOR DECEMBER WITH “STOCKING STUFFERS”

A hilarious play consisting of six short holiday scenes will be presented by the seasoned group of amateur thespians called the Angelica Players on December 5 and 6 at approximately 7 pm at the Angelica Free Library, 55 West Main Street (2nd floor). A matinee will close the show at 3 pm on Sunday, December 7. Refreshments will be available throughout the shows.
“Stocking Stuffers” by Geff Moyer promises to entertain with hilarious costumes, silly stories and wonderfully odd characters. The Easter Bunny, Cupid, Uncle Sam, Hagatha theWitch and Ezekiel the pilgrim plot to steal Old Saint Nick’s limelight; then certain well-known reindeer named Donner and Blitzen attempt to reverse history, and land in jail. HISTORY BUFFS - TAKE NOTE

The History Preservation Roundtable of Allegany County, a newly formed group of historians, museum curators and others interested in local history, has prepared a comprehensive 2009 calendar showcasing towns in the County. THOMAS MERTON NIGHT - FIRST FRIDAYS - December 5

Friday, December 5, at 7:30 pm the Mustard Seed Inn and B&B, 13 E. Center St., Andover, will host a THOMAS MERTON NIGHT at their “First Fridays” program. Come learn about a man who was hailed as a prophet and condemned for blasphemy. Thomas Merton was an elegant spiritual writer, mystic and poet. A Trappist monk who lived a cloistered life, Merton was a powerful social voice who inspired an entire generation to form their consciences on war, race and justice. Through his books and astonishingly wide range of friends he inspired people to look deeply inside themselves and also to address the needs of the world around them.

The Genesee Valley Chorus will present a Christmas Concert December 7 at 3 pm in the new Nancy Howe Auditorium in Wellsville. Members of the Performing Arts Orchestra will join the chorus conducted by Jack Darr. Carole Aldrich will accompany on the piano. The Chorus plans a public concert at 6 pm at the Holy Family Church in Belmont the same day.

Beginning in January 2009, Norma Bartlett will be directing the Chorus, which will be preparing a Lenten program and a Spring Dessert Concert. Anyone with some experience in choral singing is invited to join. Rehearsals are at 7 pm Tuesdays at Shepherd of the Valley Church on Fassett Lane in Wellsville. VALENTINE’S DAY CONCERT

The Allegany Arts Association and Alfred University Chamber Singers will present a special concert with hors d’oeuvres and delicious chocolate desserts on Saturday, February 14, 2009, at Susan Howell Hall on the AU campus. The evening will begin at 7 pm as guests enjoy a flute duet while relaxing with finger foods, punch and cake. Director Dr. Luanne Crosby will again showcase an elegant evening featuring songs by the excellent AU Chamber Singers in an intimate “romantic” setting uniquely available at Howell Hall.

Seating will be limited to only 80 persons, so romantics and music lovers should purchase tickets ($35/couple, $17 single) early at the AU Campus Center, from any Chamber Singers member, or call 607-587-8372 or 585-593-5705.

Proceeds from this special concert will assist the Chamber Singers in funding their upcoming European Tour, and the Allegany Arts Association in presenting children’s summer art classes throughout the County free of charge.

The fire truck ran through the stop sign and the fireman in the truck went home to eat some chili and tomatoes. Then he woke up on the wrong side of the bed and his face turned hot as he stormed into work. Come to find out he had a throbbing fever.
So what color was I talking about anyway?

One day a boy went swimming in the lake. He looked up into the sky to see if he could spot any clouds. He did not see any. The little boy was sad so he went to the ocean to see if he could see any clouds. He wanted to see clouds because they reminded him of his favorite cotton candy. It was cold that evening so he went home before he could catch a cold.
So what color was I talking about anyway?

Once there was a leprechaun who was jealous all the time. The only thing that seemed to be a positive about that leprechaun was that he recycled. His favorite animal was a frog and he loved limes. One day he met up with his friends and started playing Irish games like find the four-leaf clover in the rotten hay stack. he did not win a single game. He was mumbling and grumbling to his unlucky self all the way home until he stumbled across a shiny dew-covered four-leaf clover. Then he smiled.

Once there was a cat named shadow. He lurked around for food whenever he could. Often it was midnight before he found a meal. He was a charcoal cat and as afar as I could tell he needed comfort and care before he met a meal that wouldn't run in the dark brush.

Harmonica Class with Rich Shear

2008 was the second year of popular harmonica lessons taught by Rich Shear. By day he's a mild mannered shoe store proprietor but in the evening Rich can wail on his harmonica with Steel Door.

Steel Door is the creation of left-handed guitarist Dwight Allen. Singing with the group are Dwight's wife Gail and daughter Lyndsey. Chris Dahill, Tom Kailbourn, Scott Grantier and sometimes Cort and Dan Dunham are also in the group. Rich not only spices the music with harmonica but also belts out mean Mick Jagger vocals.

Here are some photos of Rich in his newest-persona as harmonica teacher where he kept to the basics. He feels sure some of the kids will be hooked on the mouth harp and always play - just like him.

The Allegany Arts Association would like to publicly thank Rick Whitwood at the Music Alley for graciously hosting lessons in his store, gratis.

Bridet and Leah made these beads. They made one more but the glaze ran so it stuck to the wire and I had to smash it with a hammer to get the other beads off the wire. Glaze is like that.

This glaze was once a pretty pink. A bit of blue was spashed into it and now the whole bucket is purple.

It's Time to Travel Through Music

Question: Describe your experience in this class. Did you like it? Why or why not? Was it what you expected?

Cooper: I liked it because I've never made pottery on a wheel before. It wasn't what I expected because a I usually just work clay with my hands but we used a wheel.

Jessica: I liked the class very much. It was fun and enjoyable. I've never done much with clay and this made me want to try it more. This is what I expected and more. The class is a hard-working time but it is fun. It isn't like you can't talk and the teacher is always willing to help and answer questions.

Sarah: I liked it a lot. I got to make a lot of cool things and had many choices. It was what I expected because I have taken a pottery class before with someone else. I have to say I like this one better. I leaned how vinegar is good to use with clay to connect pieces of clay to one another.

Lauren: It was what I expected because it was very, very fun. I liked it because you would never just sit there. You would always be doing something.

Leah: I love clay class because I can use my imagination. It was what I expected. I thought it would be fun and it was.

Adult evaluation: The teacher had the attention of the students. She was direct in instruction and made good eye contact. Also, I felt the students gathering around the table in a circular manner was good. I feel this is a very successful program. Any time a child can learn a new skill or try something makes it successful.

Bridget: I liked it because the experience is great! I also liked it because I learned how to properly make a clay bowl without having it crack or fall apart.

Kevin: I liked this class because I've always wanted to learn about throwing pots and making figures. I learned about physical and chemical changes.

Mike: Yes, I liked it because you got to make stuff with clay.

Kailee: My experience in the clay class was a lot of fun. I loved it. It was everything I expected and more. I learned how to throw pots on the pottery wheel properly. I also learned about the chemical changes that occur within the clay.

Madi: I love the class because I got to use the wheel. I thought it would be like, "Here's some clay. Make something." but it wasn't. It was awesome. She really went along with all the steps 1 by 1 and if you messed up she would not really care.

Ryder: I liked this class because I love to learn new things and this was right up my alley.

Ridge: I learned that it is not hard to blow things up in the kiln.

Mitchell: I loved this class. I looked forward to it every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I learned that you should take your time on your work and that the pottery wheel is harder than it looks.

Tyler: I loved this class. It is so much fun and you're able to go your way which I love. It was great. There is nothing better.

Morgan: Time flies when you have fun with clay. I came last year and had a blast.

Nick: I liked the way ideas sparked when I didn't know what to make. It was better than I expected see how I was forced to go.

Daniel: I learned that you need to take your time and not rush because if you rush the clay will not hold together.

Katie: I learned that when my mind and hands work together I can make something FABULOUS.

String Art Design was taught by Lillian Milliman on July 17th 12–3 and 18th from 10 am till noon at the Fillmore Library for grades 3 and up. These workshop members showed that they had a great time revisiting a craft from the 70s.

Our sewing class had only two students but Meredith Chilson of Green Circle Grove opened her home to them and gave her time so that these young ladies could learn basic sewing skills.

Notes from an adult evaluation
Meredith made the workshop interesting to the girls with fun projects at their level. She's great at talking to and working with kids. She is an excellent sewing teacher and passed skills on to the kids. Sewing is a great skill for young people to learn. My daughter wants to do more sewing projects on her own and participate next year. She now fosters an enjoyment of sewing and is proud of her accomplishments.

What is the Allegany Arts Association?

The Allegany Arts Association, a non-profit organization founded in 1982, seeks to promote participation in the arts by all citizens in Allegany County, a rural county in New York's western Southern Tier.

The Allegany Arts Association provides information and advice on arts programming and development, and a variety of arts experiences for all age groups.

For years and years Willie Allen was the driving force behind the AAA and she maintained an office, brought the Rochester Philharmonic to Wellsville, had performances of mimes and ballet companies on the Wellsville High School stage and thrilled us will all kinds of performing groups that one would never expect in Wellsville. There will never be anyone to replace her in terms of connections, dedication and ability to charm sponsors into writing checks so now there is no physical office. The Allegany Arts Association is occasionally supported by the New York State Council on the Arts but more often by the Allegany County Youth Bureau and always by individual and corporate members and sponsors.

The Allegany Arts Association sponsors summer art classes for children throughout the county in order to encouarge creativity and problem solving. The AAA also sponsors concerts and other programs to promote the arts.
